Session 1: The Case for China – Repositioning the Strategy

China has delivered 30 years of unprecedented growth, and despite the current slowdown there’s a good chance it will add as much GDP in the next 10 years as it did in the past 15. Add to that a stable government that welcomes investment in key areas, a rapidly digitalising society, and the rise of local innovation and outbound investment and you have a strategic engagement imperative for most MNCs. Our opening session takes stock of where the strategic narrative on China is heading in the boardroom.

Session 2: The Return of Geopolitics – Managing in an Uncertain World

How can firms operate in a world where policies can be overturned overnight with a tweet? Achieving resilience and flexibility in supply chains has become a boardroom issue. Talent localisation strategies taken too far might need to be rebalanced. This session will look for the bigger picture behind the US-China trade war. Some trends will aggravate that dispute while others might offset the damage. In this dinner debate we’ll talk through how to tweak localisation strategies, elevate government relations, and ensure that China operations have a vital – rather than isolated – role in global growth.

Session 3: Retooling for New Business Structures

The challenge to secure key talent remains as leading platform players, new insurgent start-ups, and flourishing POEs offer compelling pathways and national purpose. MNCs have moved the needle to inject China speed into their operations by greater empowerment and carved out reporting lines that go straight to global HQ. Freshly caffeinated at this session, we’ll debate how the China team is dealing with the advancing technologies, with economic decoupling, and with diverging ecosystems.

Session 4: Stepping Up Innovation in China

Establishing global R&D in China has become a standard move in MNC strategy, but innovation comes in different shapes and sizes. Adopting the open ecosystem approach through venture capital funds, university research partnerships, and corporate accelerators have added more tools to the kit. At this session, we’ll debate the strategies for a strong R & D talent pipeline, silo-busting employee talent pools, open innovation, and how ‘China-for-China’ innovation is evolving into a globally powerful force.
