Malaysia’s New Government: A Chance for Better Business?
Political uncertainty has undermined Malaysia for several years, slowing government decisions, making big projects uncertain, and hurting business and consumer confidence. The latest twist in the political saga has returned to power UMNO, the party that led mostly stable governments from independence in 1957 to 2018.
That raises two questions. First, will Malaysia have a stable and effective government through to the next election, which is due on or before July 2023? Second, will underlying political trends support long-term growth opportunities?
We will be joined by James Chin, a well-informed and forthright commentator on Malaysian politics and society. He will open the session with a few comments on the new government and how the evolution of politics will shape the business environment.
