Rising Economic Nationalism: The Impact on Strategy & Markets in Asia with Richard Martin, MD, IMA ASIA

Hopefully, the current US-China trade spat will ease in time for US mid-term elections in November.  Yet, in its wake, many firms are rethinking their supply chains, as economic nationalism has graduated from a threat to a fact and looks set to stay.  Apart from the impact on strategy, that will affect markets in many ways.  In China, for example, we may see customers swing away from US brands, helping alternative suppliers from Europe and North Asia.  Elsewhere in Asia, it may mean the arrival (or return) of some export operations from China, lifting local growth in exports, wages, household incomes, and GDP.  Our goal in Q3 will be to provide a framework for assessing such developments and integrating them into strategy.  We’ll also update the themes from our prior meetings, including the trend to weaker export growth, rising volatility as QE winds down, and the importance of local demand growth and Asia’s relatively good risk profiles.

Philippines Strategy Review with Peter Wallace, Founder of Wallace Business Forum, Manila

The Philippines has been one of ASEAN’s star performers over the last five years, with 6%+ growth driven by a strong lift in fixed investment and a powerful consumer engine.  Moreover, it is well placed to tap China’s outbound tourist flood as well as relocation of light manufacturing for export.  In this session, we’ll discuss the prospects for domestic demand and growth in new industries as the economy expands.  Peter Wallace is the founder of the Philippines’ leading forum for country CEOs, and over the last 38 years has held innumerable roundtables with the country’s presidents, key cabinet secretaries, local business leaders, and central bank heads.  His first-hand knowledge of these individuals and their policy positions is unrivalled.  For companies serious about the Philippines, this is an opportunity to delve into the political, policy, and economic factors that will influence growth and market opportunity.
