Digital connectivity is laying the foundation for strong e-commerce growth in Southeast Asia. The surge of user engagement on such online marketplaces as Lazada, Shopee and Tokopedia is driving this growth. Plus, the dynamism of the region is attracting foreign giants such as Amazon and Alibaba. The combination is setting the scene for an East meets West battle of the titans. Meanwhile, ASEAN economic ministers recently signed an agreement to facilitate cross-border e-commerce transactions within the region. The aim is to spur the use of e-commerce as a way of driving regional economic growth.
E-commerce volumes across the region remain small. But, companies should plan for the day when they will have a significant impact on physical sales. New go-to-market strategies such as online platforms and partnerships will be essential to reach and retain your customers. Moreover, an intimate understanding of your customers’ internet consumption habits will be essential if you are to understand this emerging consumer landscape.
IMA Asia Management Forum members can join us on Wednesday 14 February to gain insights on how the marketplace is changing and how to adjust operations to these new dynamics.
